We stayed on Sugar Mountain thanks to friends of ours who have a condo there, at the very top of the mountain, as in 5,100 feet of mountain which is much higher than the usual elevation of 7 feet where we live. The view was amazing. A few mornings we woke up to very dense fog that seemed to come right onto the balcony.
We took little trips out and about each day, enjoying the cool weather with windows down in the car and not needing air conditioning anywhere. It may have been cooler there in summer than it was here in the winter! I never broke a sweat, even when I beat my husband at miniature golf.
We had local beer, Blind Squirrel, and went to Banner Elk winery for a tasting. One day we spent in Valle Crucis and Boone, shopping at Mast General Store, lunch at Our Daily Bread, and then stopping at Stick Boy Bread Co. to pick up a loaf of bread for our dinner.
If you are ever over in that part of North Carolina, a visit to any of those places is worth the trip! Oh, and also, The Banner Elk Cafe is another great place anytime you are hungry!
