Lawn Chair Catechism - Session 1

Today we begin our summer reading and discussion group sponsored over at Catholic Mom.  We are reading Forming Intentional Disciples:  The Path to Knowing and Following Jesus by Sherry A. Weddell.

On to the question:  How would you describe your lived relationship with God to this point in your life?

Since I have been preparing a talk for an upcoming retreat experience I've been thinking about this very thing.  To quote myself, "God is as alive and real to me as the person sitting next to me."  I rely on him each and every day to be the person he needs and to live in the knowledge that he cares for me.  Sometimes when I sit quietly and put myself in his presence the peace I gain is only possible from God.  Or I get an answer to a question or sometimes a new project.
It is because of those times that I am able to persevere when I don't feel him near me.
As my knowledge of the ebb and flow in my spiritual life has grown I am less troubled by change.  It matters less what or how I pray, but it is very important that I do pray.  Which leads me to the next question:  What does the word "Discipleship" mean to you?  Simply put, it means sharing all the good I get from God with others.  His grace, consolation in prayer, peace, knowledge, and strength moves me to give to others and back to God out of gratitude.  The last question I am going to answer is this:  Do you perceive a need in the Church today to help Catholics become more fervent followers of Jesus Christ?  YES!

See you next week!

I loved how succinct this post was. When you wrote “Simply put, it means sharing all the good I get from God with others. His grace, consolation in prayer, peace, knowledge, and strength moves me to give to others and back to God out of gratitude.” How do you find that happy medium? Is there one? How do you share without sounding a little nutty (to them, because I don’t feel nutty) for doing it? I sometimes feel like with other women specifically in my group, I get this look like “You’re kidding right? That doesn’t apply to me, can we talk about something else?”

I love that bit about God being as real to you as the person next to you. I just looked beside me and smiled. Because hey, there he is!

I also love the perspective on change and growing in flexibility. Ebb and flow...a great way to think about life in general and especially the spiritual life.

Looking forward to more from you! :)
